Micah's Place domestic violence agency in Fernandina Beach has received a $5,500 grant from the Verizon Foundation.
Fernandina Beach, FL – Micah’s Place domestic violence agency in Fernandina Beach has received a $5,500 grant from the Verizon Foundation to help survivors of abuse SOAR (Start Out All Right). The program is designed to address various barriers that prevent survivors from gaining independence.
“With this grant, Micah’s Place will be better able to serve survivors of domestic violence and widen the continuum of care throughout all of our programs,” said Shandra Riffey, the agency’s executive director. “Micah’s Place is honored to count Verizon as a partner in our mission to end domestic violence one relationship at a time.”
Michelle Robinson, Southeast region president for Verizon Communications, said, “Survivors of domestic abuse victims face so many challenges, but we’re fortunate to have an organization such as Micah’s Place to help them overcome obstacles and move forward in their lives.”
Local residents can join the effort against domestic violence through the HopeLine program from Verizon. HopeLine bins are located in all Verizon Wireless stores to collect no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories. The devices are then refurbished and/or recycled to benefit domestic violence agencies and victims. For more information, visit www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.
“Domestic abuse can often trap victims in a cycle of helplessness,” said Pam Tope, Florida region president of Verizon Wireless. “We’re proud to team with Micah’s Place and the Fernandina Beach community to help survivors break free.”
The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon, uses its technology, financial resources and partnerships to address critical social issues, with a focus on education and domestic violence prevention. In 2010, the foundation awarded nearly $67 million to nonprofit agencies in the U.S. and abroad. Through Verizon Volunteers, one of the nation’s largest employee volunteer programs, Verizon employees and retirees have volunteered nearly 6 million hours of community service since 2000.
