Protect Plants, Pets, People and Pipes in Cold Weather

In Florida, we do not get much below-freezing weather, but the local forecasters are calling for some unusually cold weather over the next couple of days. Protect your sensitive foliage by bringing your delicate plants indoors, or cover them with a fabric covering. Bring your pets into the house or into your garage during the night if they do not have outdoor shelter. Check on your older neighbors and loved ones and make sure they have adequate blankets. If they are keeping warm by using space heaters, it is wise to review the proper safety procedures with them. On the Island, we don’t worry much about wrapping our exposed pipes or leaving faucets dripping, but I just wanted to mention the pipes as a reminder. Finally, Floridians always forget to turn off their automatic sprinklers during cold weather and this creates hazardous driving conditions when the water freezes on the road.
