Quality Time in Nassau County

Quality Time in Nassau CountyFor as long as I have lived in Nassau County, I have worked in Jacksonville. This commute added approximately two more hours to each work day leaving very little room for quality me time. I would get out of bed three hours before I needed to be at work so that I could go in early to beat the majority of the traffic. Now that is all behind me and I can reclaim those lost hours in my day. This past week, I started a new job that is on the island.

The shortened drive to work is such a relief, however, I am trying to get used to planning my time differently. During my drive to and from work, I used to catch up on phone calls, plan the menu for dinner, or spend time singing to the radio. Now I can spend the time enjoying my trip because I know if i need to pick up something from the store, or run to the post office, I can take care of that during my lunch hour. I also save money because I fill my gas tank a lot less often and if I like, I can go home for lunch.

The towns in Nassau County are considered to be bedroom communities with limited opportunities for employment. Many residents commute to Jacksonville every day to earn a living. Those lucky enough to work on the island work at jobs in the hospitality industry and in the professional industry including real estate, legal services and medical care. The major employers in Nassau County are Omni Amelia Island Plantation, Ritz-Carlton, Smurfit-Stone, Wal-Mart, Baptist Medical Center Nassau, Winn-Dixie, Rayonier, and White Oak Plantation. The largest employer in Hilliard is the Federal Aviation Administration facility.

I feel very fortunate that I will no longer have to commute to Jacksonville every day. Optimally, I will have more time for exercise (no more excuses), and running errands, and I will no longer be as tired in the evenings. For most of us, a long commute is about getting a better job in exchange for less personal time. I hope my friends and family will enjoy seeing more of me and that I will have more time for myself since I won’t be spending as much time in the car.
