Seasonal Produce has Many AdvantagesA local farmers market provides seasonal produce. The farmers in our Fernandina Beach Market Place farmers’ market grow and harvest different fruits and vegetables based on the time of the year. For example, you may prefer baby spinach in your smoothies, but June in Florida is not the best time to grow spinach, which is a winter crop. Shoppers often ask us why we don’t have baby spinach in June when you can find it in the grocery stores? Well, the grocery store spinach is either grown in a climate controlled green house, or it could be shipped in from California or even South America. You may be eating healthy, but you are not living a “green” lifestyle until you learn to take advantage of the locally grown seasonal produce. Locally grown means your food is fresher and costs less to distribute. After all, how fresh can your spinach be if it gets shipped across the country? Let’s not begin to discuss the cost of fuel to get a handful of spinach to NE Florida from South America!
