Sending a thank you note after an interview will make you stand out from the crowd and is sure to put you ahead of the competition.
The competition for available jobs is tough these days. If you are one of the lucky ones that is able secure an interview, be sure to follow-up afterwards. Sending a thank you note can make you stand out from all other applicants.
If possible, get a business card from the interviewer during the interview, or call back to get the interviewer’s name and job title. Send the note right after the interview and make sure to keep it brief and professional. Basically you want to thank your interviewer for taking the time to speak to you and to express, again, how interested you are in the position as well as how excited you are about the prospect of working for the company. Sending a personalized note shows follow-through and a professionalism that simply can’t be beat.
Keep the note short (two to three lines at most) and hand write it. Nothing seems more impersonal than a computer generator form letter. Finally, sign the letter ‘Sincerely’ and you will have a heartfelt thank you that will keep your name on top of the stack of candidates.
The hardest part of job searching is waiting for a positive response from a potential employer. You can do nothing about the situation, except wait. Be patient. Sometimes the other party needs time to think it over before either rejecting you outright or deciding to continue the process.
Remember that although rejections are disappointing, at least they give clarity and closure and can compel you to keep going with your job search. Try to take it in stride and realize that it was a good learning experience.
It is so important to keep a gracious and positive attitude throughout this daunting and tedious process. Sending a thank you note after an interview will make you stand out from the crowd and is sure to put you ahead of the competition.
