Spring means strawberries in Florida, and if you are not lucky you can still find plenty of berries to make your favorite recipes.
Of course, you can usually pick up strawberries at your local grocery store, but if what they say is true, “The fresher the berry, the sweeter the taste,” to get the freshest berries you have to pick them yourself.
Luckily, you can get fresh berries at the Fernandina Farmers Market on Saturday!
Below is a recipe that I like to make because it isn’t high-calorie or high-fat and I can really taste the strawberries. Besides eating strawberries straight from the refrigerator, you can also add strawberries to many things such as smoothies, cereal, champagne, or fruit salad.
1 pkg sugar free strawberry Jello
1 pkg sugar free vanilla pudding
1 qt. fresh strawberries
2 c. water
Add Jello and pudding to the water.
Bring to a full boil.
Slice strawberries and add to hot Jello and pudding mixture.
Pour into a 9” pie pan and refrigerate.
Helpful U-Pick Tips:
-Dress comfortably. Wear loose fit clothing.
-Wear a hat or cap and bring sunscreen.
-Bring your own containers.
-If you plan to spend the day, take ice to keep berries cool.
-Select only firm ripe berries.
-Be careful not to remove the tops of the berries.
-Make an effort to pick every ripe berry on each plant rather than jumping from plant to plant and row to row.
The growers will appreciate your consideration and you will reduce the amount of strawberries that are left sitting in the field.
