Winter Surf Fishing on Amelia Island

By: Judie Mackie

Surf fishing on Amelia Island is always fun, but if you are going to try it during the colder of winter you may need a local tip or two. Blues and whiting both swim along our shores and can easily be caught with a piece of fresh shrimp fished on the bottom of the ocean.

If you are fishing for whiting, keep in mind that they have small mouths and you may only need to use ¬Ω of the peeled bait shrimp when fishing with a small single hook. You will want to cast as far out as you can and if you can get to the beach as the tide turns to outgoing you should be able to catch a mess for dinner. The best spots are the old pipeline, Amelia Park on the south end or try the jetties at Fort Clinch State Park.

I received this question about this article:
    Judie,
Where is “the old pipeline”? How do I get there?
    Enjoy your journey,

Fish, the final frontier – These are the voyages of the Starship Dreams Float. His five year mission: to explore strange new mud holes, to seek out big fish and new tackle, boldly going where big boats go.

    Joe,
Great question! I debated all day whether I should give out the information.
    (Ha ha!!!)
The old pipeline is located near the lighthouse on Fletcher Avenue, park at the beach access at the end of Jasmine Street.
Let me know how the fishin’ goes!
